Dipper Pines.

Mason “Dipper” Pines is a smart, curious, and adventurous twelve year-old boy spending the summer with his Great Uncle Stan in Gravity Falls, Oregon, where he and his sister constantly encounter the town's paranormal side.

He is soon joined by other children with similar experiences like Coraline Jones and Norman Babcock, teaming up together in order to investigate the supernatural forces that lurk in the darkest corners of the town.

Appearance

Dipper wears a blue and white hat with a blue brim and a blue pine tree on the front. He has somewhat shaggy, messy brown hair and relatively pale skin, and his nose is a bit darker than the rest of his face. His eyes are brown, like Mabel's, with noticeable bags underneath. He wears a navy blue vest, (which has inner pockets on both sides) a reddish-orange t-shirt, gray shorts, white socks with a red stripe, black sneakers, and a sometimes visible gray digital wristwatch.

Personality

Intelligent, compassionate, self-conscious and rational, Dipper Pines can't wait to leave adolescence in the rear-view mirror. Born adventurer at heart, Dipper can't sit still and is always looking for the next riddle to solve. His scrupulous attention to detail comes in handy when he is off figuring out the mystery of the day, but sometimes his over-zealousness leaves others questioning his credibility. When Dipper and his friends are on their adventures he is at times the one to act as the leader mostly because he is shown to be very brave and smart, but the role of leadership still applies to Coraline.

He can sometimes be selfish and is not above using Gravity Falls' mysterious elements to his advantage. He can also be ruthless in his pursuit of his goals but ultimately he always does the right thing and has the right motivations. It is also well mentioned that Dipper is paranoid and has trust issues, since the beginning when the journal warned him to "Trust No One" and been skeptical about people and/or situations. With his experience in Gravity Falls as well as his knowledge in the mystery novels that he reads, Dipper thinks much like an actual detective.

As he got older, Dipper's experience with the supernatural as well as the extra-terrestrial widens to a degree where he rivals even the greatest of paranormal investigators despite the fact that he is still relatively young. Dipper's personality remains mostly the same, but throughout his adventures he has learned how to fully embrace the concept of teamwork and to not let his paranoia get the better of him. Dipper has also learned to listen to his heart rather than his brain for once in order to truly see the difference between right and wrong.

Role in the Story

Mystery Kids: The Beginning

Dipper was first seen criticizing his sister, Mabel, for making a sweater with lots of buttons, calling it a waste of time, while he was tasked with keeping things orderly in the Mystery Shack by Stan Pines by labeling everything in the store. Shortly after that, Dr. Loboto arrived looking for brains. Despite both Dipper and Mabel trying to help him, Loboto's rude behavior made Dipper attempt to make the mad dentist leave. Eventually, Dr. Loboto pulled out a large drill and attacked the children.

After a long while of avoiding Dr. Loboto, Dipper and Mabel try to escape the Mystery Shack and flee. Much to Dipper's horror, Mabel tosses the journal out the window with the intention of creating an exit using her grappling hook. Unfortunately, this failed and Dr. Loboto got ready to kill the children. Now much more desperate to run from Loboto, Dipper smashed a jar of coins on Dr. Loboto's head and made a mad dash for the door. Dipper and Mabel then made their escape on a golf kart and drove off into the woods.

During their trek through the forest, Coraline's phone flew past Dipper and Mabel, briefly stopping them as they heard an engine-like noise and saw bright lights in the distance. Thinking that Dr. Loboto was catching up to them, Dipper frantically drove as fast as he could. He soon encountered Coraline, Norman, Wybie and Neil after he and Mabel almost ran them over with the golf kart, which they crashed. Unfortunately for Dipper and the others, it did not take very long for Dr. Loboto to catch up to them. Now with a weaponized car, Dr. Loboto would have killed Dipper and his new friends if not for the untimely arrival of Lili and Raz, the latter of whom demolished Loboto's car. After Loboto got chased off by Raz and Coraline, the children ventured to the Mystery Shack.

At the Mystery Shack, Dipper looked through the amount of debt that they had and claimed they would be in debt for the rest of their lives. While chatting with Norman, he came up with an idea. The idea was that everyone work together to defeat Dr. Loboto. For a brief moment in time, it seemed that Dipper's idea was working, and he even came up with an elaborate strategy for how the group would go about taking Loboto down. However, everyone started arguing again. After Norman manage to get everyone to work together again, including Dipper.

During the 80's montage, Dipper and Mabel were looking at various weapons that the team could use. When Dipper tried lifting up a mace, it proved to be too heavy, with Coraline being able to lift it instead. When the gang left to defeat Dr. Loboto, Dipper was the one who brought the golf kart that Wybie upgraded. At the junkyard, when Mabel was hugging a beaver, Coraline said they weren't going to give Mabel a rabies shot, with Dipper saying she already had one. During the battle with Dr. Loboto, Coraline ordered Dipper, Norman and Neil to deactivate the weaponized car.

When the gang celebrated Loboto's arrest, Mabel called it a victory for the "Mystery Twins", with Dipper responding that it was more like "Mystery Octuplets". When Neil suggested that the team be called the Mystery Kids, Dipper liked the idea and officially dubbed the group the Mystery Kids. When it came time to vote for a team leader, everyone voted for Coraline, Dipper included. In the epilogue, after Lili read Coraline's mind and embarrassed her, Lili also read Dipper and Mabel's minds and embarrassed them as well, which in Dipper's case was by mentioning "Disco Girl".
